Gym Pilates, Reformer-Only Studios, and Corrective Multi-Apparatus Pilates: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters

Pilates is often spoken about as if it is one single method. In reality, how and where Pilates is taught makes a significant difference — especially for those dealing with pain, injuries, posture issues, or long-term movement goals.
Today, Pilates generally falls into three categories: Gym Pilates, Reformer-Only Studios, and Corrective Multi-Apparatus Pilates. Understanding these differences helps you choose the approach that truly supports your body.
Gym Pilates is usually offered in large group settings, often mat-based or in bigger Reformer classes. It follows general programming and is best suited for people looking for light exercise who are pain-free and not seeking individual correction.
Reformer-Only Studios focus solely on the Reformer, typically in smaller boutique groups. These classes are more structured and strength-focused, but relying on one piece of equipment can be limiting — especially for bodies with injuries, imbalances, or specific rehabilitation needs.
Corrective Multi-Apparatus Pilates uses a range of equipment — including the Reformer, Tower, Chair, Cadillac, Barrels, and Mat — to create a highly personalised and therapeutic approach. It focuses on posture, alignment, movement quality, and long-term function, and is commonly used alongside physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
The difference matters. Modern lifestyles — long hours of sitting, repetitive movement, stress, and limited recovery — place unique demands on the body. Choosing the wrong Pilates approach can fail to address pain, reinforce poor patterns, or overload already stressed areas.
At MyCore Studio, we take a multi-disciplinary, corrective approach to Pilates. By integrating multi-apparatus training, rehabilitation-aware programming, and focused attention in small classes, we support clients through pain management, recovery, performance, and long-term movement health.
